My Top Three Books for Empowerment

brain candy mindfulness motivation self improvement Dec 02, 2024

In a world with too much information that comes too fast, in tiny pieces on social media, I LOVE diving into a book that shows me how someone else has successfully navigated (and taught others to navigate) the Divine experience of being human.

I don't think anyone has all the answers, and we all have vastly different backgrounds, neurological wiring and experiences of life, but the inspiration and creativity that comes from a few new tools, a fresh perspective and feeling like we're not alone?

It's EMPOWERING.

A few tips before I share three of the most empowering books I've read in the past couple of years:

1. Test everything against your own sense of "yes" and "no." If an author shares something that just doesn't ring true for you, doesn't work for you or just feels overwhelming : skip it, read it and don't apply it or yell "f*&$ that!" and just move on. I've often found that things I couldn't resonate with in the moment come back to me later in life JUST when I need them.

2. Don't try to read and apply the whole book at once. Many of these are written and sold as a process for change because, well, that's what sells. But I've found that applying small pieces of these books in small doses is actually more helpful because I can integrate and apply what I'm learning in real time. Sometimes I'll listen to the whole thing and just choose a few key tools. Sometimes I'll only read/listen through a certain step and wait until I've applied that one.

3. Try out authors' suggestions in small and low-charge pieces. When you're learning new tools, use them on silly things like "what do I want to wear today" or "should I go to dinner with that friend or not?" You want to build the skill FIRST, then work on applying it to higher stakes situations in your life like romantic relationships and career moves.

Without further instruction, I share with you...

My Top Three Books for Empowerment! (Nov 2024 edition)

Feminine Genius, Liyana Silver

This book is a beautiful exploration of emotions, intuition and sensuality, and gave me insight into parts of myself I'd never been given permission to acknowledge or leverage. Silver lays out ways we can practice being intensely powerful, deeply sensitive and mindfully engaged in our own experiences in both spiritual and pragmatic ways. Note: the language is quite gendered, but she does address this and talks about it early in the book.

Professional Troublemaker: A Fear Fighter's Manual, Luvvie Alaya Jones

This was just FUN. So many of us are - in many ways - learning to be DISRUPTORS, and to show up to the table with our own opinions, ideas and personal experiences without apology. The exercises and anecdotes in this book left me feeling inspired, excited and generally just...happy. It's a quick, easy read and quick and easy to apply.

The Way of Integrity, Martha Beck

Martha Beck is one of my all time favorite authors and coaches because she so beautifully holds the balance between science and spirit. This book is no different. The Way of Integrity is a road map for stepping out of misaligned behaviors and internal programming and into a feeling of deep YES in your life. I found exactly 0% of this book to be convenient. But the entire thing felt deeply necessary, approachable and loving.

Runners Up:

Untamed, Glennon Doyle (abstract, but inspiring)

Pussy, Regena Thomashauer (POWERFUL, but very sexual in nature)

Whole Brain Living, Jill Bolte Taylor (educational, but really cerebral)
